Questions

The questions we're asked most.

Straight answers on deadlines, thresholds and cross-border tax — the things worth knowing before the first conversation.

What does Aurora CPA Accounting Services do?

Aurora CPA Accounting Services is an Australian accounting and tax advisory firm with offices in Sydney and Melbourne. The firm handles individual, company, trust and SMSF tax returns, BAS and GST, bookkeeping and payroll, business structuring and advisory, and international and cross-border tax. Aurora works with both Australian small businesses and international clients investing into or moving to Australia.

Is Aurora CPA a registered tax agent?

Yes. Aurora CPA Accounting Services is a CPA practice and a Registered Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board, and its advisers hold Chartered Tax Adviser and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand credentials. Only a registered tax agent may charge a fee to prepare and lodge an Australian tax return, and only a registered agent's clients get the extended lodgment dates described below.

Where is Aurora CPA located?

Aurora CPA has two offices. The Sydney office is at Level 3, 377–383 Sussex St, Sydney NSW 2000, on +61 2 9322 0688. The Melbourne office is at Suite 405, 685 Burke Road, Camberwell VIC 3124, on +61 3 9016 9188. Clients elsewhere in Australia and overseas are served remotely, and email reaches both offices at contact@auroracpa.com.au.

Does Aurora CPA have Mandarin, Cantonese or Vietnamese speaking accountants?

Yes. Aurora CPA's advisers work in English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese, so clients can discuss structuring, residency and cross-border tax in the language they think in rather than through a translator. Aurora also publishes tax updates through a WeChat official account, which is a practical channel for clients based in or dealing with mainland China.

Can Aurora CPA help a non-resident who owns Australian property?

Yes — non-resident property is one of Aurora CPA's specialist areas. Foreign residents selling Australian real property are subject to foreign resident capital gains withholding, where the purchaser withholds a share of the price and remits it to the ATO unless the seller obtains a clearance or variation certificate. Foreign residents also cannot claim the CGT main residence exemption. Aurora handles the certificates, the return and the withholding credit.

When is my Australian tax return due?

If you lodge your own Australian individual tax return it is due by 31 October following the end of the financial year on 30 June. If a registered tax agent lodges for you, you generally get a later date under the agent's lodgment program — often well into the following year — but you must be on that agent's client list before 31 October to qualify. Engaging Aurora CPA before 31 October is what secures the extension.

When is BAS due each quarter in Australia?

Quarterly business activity statements are due on 28 October for the July–September quarter, 28 February for October–December, 28 April for January–March and 28 July for April–June. Businesses that lodge through a registered agent such as Aurora CPA generally receive an additional concession for most quarters. Aurora keeps the underlying bookkeeping current through the quarter so the BAS is a review rather than a reconstruction.

Do I need to register for GST in Australia?

An Australian business must register for GST once its annual GST turnover reaches $75,000, or $150,000 for a not-for-profit organisation. Ride-sourcing and taxi drivers must register regardless of turnover. Registration is also worth considering below the threshold when a business incurs significant GST on inputs. Aurora CPA reviews the turnover test, handles the registration and sets up the reporting cycle.

Should I set up a company or a trust in Australia?

The right structure depends on who receives the income, what assets need protecting, whether foreign residents are involved and what the exit looks like. A company gives a flat tax rate and a clean shareholding; a discretionary trust gives distribution flexibility but has strict annual resolution deadlines. Aurora CPA's business structuring service works this through before registration, because restructuring later can trigger tax that setting up correctly avoids.

Can Aurora CPA look after a self-managed super fund?

Yes. Aurora CPA prepares self-managed super fund financial statements and annual returns, coordinates the independent audit an SMSF is required to have each year, and advises trustees on contribution caps and pension-phase timing. SMSF work sits alongside the firm's individual and company tax work, so a client's fund and their business are reviewed against each other rather than in isolation.

How do I become a client of Aurora CPA?

Start with a consultation. Email contact@auroracpa.com.au or call the Sydney office on +61 2 9322 0688 or the Melbourne office on +61 3 9016 9188. The first conversation maps the tax and accounting support the business actually needs and what it will cost; there is no obligation to proceed. Existing clients use the Aurora client portal to share documents securely.
